I'll give that a try before I pull it apart.

Do, because that sound (from what i can tell by the audio) is the innerds of the locker. The pinion didn't make that noise when it was out of the truck. And can we honestly say for sure it is the same exact noise before changing out the stock carrier?

That would asplane why it makes the noise regardless of which wheel is rotated, but if it were partially engaged I would think it would acted more locked? I hope I'm wrong again! The sound in person sounds like teeth not meshing or some such. It really howls when driven! yowza.

Dan -

I'm old enough to know that I should *never* assume that I know something for sure. All I'm willing to assert at this point is that it is:

Making Noise
Isn't the hubs
Isn't the half shafts
Makes noise when off throttle or driveshaft disconnected.

It sounds and behaves the same as it did before we did the locker, but that doesn't mean it is the same thing for sure.

Interesting. Well, it sounds like there are only a few sources of this noise. My ARB makes a thud when I let off the brakes when it is disengaged. When I pressurize the locker and then depressurize the locker, the thud goes away for like a month.

I believe it is related to the position of the locking gear in the locker itself.

Mysterious.

As long as this remains a theoretical discussion, let me throw this out there. If one wheel is stationary and you rotate the other, the gears in the ARB will be spinning. If you are able to spin both tires at the same rate, the diff gears won't be moving unless there is a difference in speed of the wheels. So if you are able to spin both at the same speed, you should be able to rule out / in the diff.

That noise surely doesn't sound like its a pinion bearing. If it is, they won't last much longer anyways.

Mike,

I've replicated the noise with the wheels rotating at the same speed. E.g. It makes the same noise when driving the truck w/ the driveshaft disconnected driving in a straight line.

Took me a few days to find the time to hook things up, but I locked and unlocked the locker about 5 times this evening while driving around. No love.

I think all that is left to do is to pull the 3rd, have a look, and go from there.

lol - I think we have enough pictures of it coming apart from the first 3x it has been pulled.

No pictures this time. I just want it pulled.

Because I know you are all dying to get the play by play on this diff project, here you go...

Pulled it this morning and picked up a used 3rd with 17k this afternoon.  Mr. Danno is swapping the locker into the new (used) 3rd and then it will all go back together.

And because posts are always better if they have a picture...

Thank you gentlemen, it is all better now. The new 3rd seems to have done the trick. I know that isn't very specific, but given the amount of effort involved in the inspect, fix/replace, reinstall, test cycle it was easier to just put a new 3rd in than it was to continue trying to diagnose/repair the problem on the bench.

A sincere thank you to Kevan for coming up to help with the diagnosis. A SUPER thank you to Dan in particular for installing the locker in two different carriers and for helping me button things up late on a Tuesday night. You guys exemplify what it means to be a NW Overlander. I'll certainly do my best to help the next guy in the same way (or you guys if you need it).
