The roof tent one of the best purchases I have made for the rrc. I LOVE it. I highly reccomend it. Talk to Todd. If you are nice he'll do a cute little coursty for you in his tutu. It was a little awkward having him show up to the shop to remove his new interior in it though.

I too would like to extend kudos to Todd for all his information and his NON salesmanship both here AND via email.  I had a lot of questions that he answered in a few short notes.  Hopefully I won't be a "lookyloo" for long!

Neat.

Some people toss egg shells in under a sheet to give it even more loft, but I like it the way it is.

The crunching noises can keep you awake!

You meant "egg crate" of course...

Wow... that trailer tent looks alot bigger.  That would be the way to go for the family.  I might have to reconsider the roof top thing.

I sell AutoHomeUS tents, the makers of the Maggiolina, Columbus, OverLand and OverCamp tents, over the web. so am a bit biased in my comments. I have owned my columbus variant for over five years now and have put tons of miles on it. Of all the tents I've tried, it is my favorite. It hinges on the front and opens up Aframe style. This gives a lot of head room and the ability to enter from both sides or the rear. It also gives great ventilation. It is the perfect size for my wife, my Boykin Spaniels and me. The fiberglass shell really protects the tent while off-roading up here the the PNW. We have lots of trees and brush that can be brutal on soft sided tents.

If I were a young parent, with wife and a couple of little kids, I'd prefer a OverLand style tent, especially the large model. The footprint is relatively small, like all the cloth sided and topped tents, but it is very spacious when open. Todd and the other can explain it better than me. They are also very airy. Nice in summer, a bit cold in winter.

I have a bunch of photos of the various types of AutoHome tents up on my website: www.northwestexpeditions.com

This site will be updated in the very near future. I've got a web designer on the job. Tent prices are approximately 5% higher now than those shown. The Euro is killing all of us. I spoke with Slee OffRoad and their costs are going way up too.

My business partner, Geoff, owns an AutoHome Adventure. He has had it for six plus years. Give us a week or two head's up, and I'm sure we could drive over and meet you guys around Ellensburg or thereabouts. It would be fun to let everyone have the chance to see all the differences in these tents. any of them are superb.

No matter what type of rooftop tent you end up buying, you will soon ask yourself why you hadn't done it earlier. My wife hated camping until I got the tent. It was the wet ground, rocks, tree roots, lions and tigers and bears thing. She is happy as a clam in the tent. She still hates off-roading though :-(

If you want to see what the AutoHome tents look like, I have a bunch of pictures of mine on the Tacoma and Geoff on his Land Cruiser.  On this site, just go to; Media, member photos, Dale Avery.

Like I said earlier, no matter which model tent you get, you will love it.  they take a lot of the drudgery out of setting up and tearing down camp everyday.

I ran across this thread while googling Maggionlina.  I saw your post about the M416.  I've got my Maggiolina hooked to a Willys M100.  Some pics are here:  http://www.14kft.com/Pg%20hole_in_the_rock_06.htm and here: http://www.14kft.com/Pg%20Willys%20M100.htm  .  It makes for a nice set-up.  Holler with questions or if you need me to shoot other pics for you.

John,

Excellent setup. I have an M416, very much like your trailer except the fenders are angled and it came with a spring over revision. Really works great for clearaance.

I have a ball hitch arrangement and want to put a lunette on it to work with my Pinzgauer. Where did you get the lunette?

I am still up in the air about which tent to put on it, roof top or Maggi. Leaning very strong to the Maggi.

Morris:

I used this to modify the trailer http://www.etrailer.com/pc-PLR~63022.htm
And this type on the Jeep http://www.etrailer.com/pc-P~TR63043.htm

This way the lunette can spin on the locked nut and the pintel allows for up and down motion. I take the pintel out when not in use. I have yet to bind it and believe me i've been in situations where if it could, it would. The downside is the trailer will tip all the way over. The good news is it won't take my truck with it.

1000D materialrather than 500D, the fabric inside is welded to thecover so it doestnt catch as easily on the tent and ladder.

and it is tan and looks KA on tony's rig.

Sounds like a nice improvement.

I'm bummed about the color change as tan won't look KA on a white disco with grey interior. Too bad they don't make them in black. Either way, I'll take function over form anyday.

Hey tony, what's the paint code for your rig?

The new one sounds like it fixes most of the quirks of the old one. I'm happy to be able to get a new one. Thanks for taking care of us here.
