| Thanks to Ben Bailey, Chris Silva, Craig Spaeth, Joe Koegler, Mark Elfring, Jack Shepherd and Ran Freundlich in attempting to get to the top of Mt. Defiance today with me. We sure got close, but the last 1/2 mile proved too difficult when we encountered snow. Regardless though, I had a really great time hooking up with all of you, meeting your family and your friends. We will have to make another go of it later this summer when the last bit will be clear for sure. Later this week I will post to the blog on more details about the trip, but for now here are a few shots from the day. Craig- any chance we can get a photo album set up for this trip? | It was fun! Thanks for waiting for me while I tried to figure out how to read the instructions on where we were meeting up....
We'll have to do it again, actually get to the top. It was good meeting all of you. Thanks for setting it up, Dustin.

| Nice pictures! Sounds like you had a great time. Small world; I was sitting in my home office in Yakima and scanning 2-Meters/440 when the scan stopped at 145.150, a repeater in Hood River, Oregon. A couple of guys were just finishing a conversation about a 4x4 event so snoopy old me, wanting to know where the 4-wheelin' action was in the Hood River area, picked up my mic and contacted the the guy near Hood River. Well, lo and behold it was Ran Freundlich. We chatted for a couple of minutes before he went wheeling and I went honey-doing. Nice making your acquaintance, Ran. |

| Sorry I had to cancel at the last minute. We were all staged ready to go in Hood River. I had been sick all weekend and woke up really feeling like crap. Figured I wouldn't be the most fun and figured you guys didn't need to start the week exposed to any bugs. Looks like I missed a great time!
Would like to say it was sure nice to have the ham radio. Woke up, slammed a bunch of cold medicine, went to the truck, dialed in the repeater Dustin sent the info to. Was able to let the group know that I couldn't make it. That way I didn't have to worry about folks waiting for me. I believe it was Ran I chatted with as well. Thanks for passing the word along.

| Sounds like a great time! Thanks for the photo teasers. The album Andy created for you guys is all set to go, so you can upload all of them now.
Great to hear that the HAM radios are working out for people. I don't know about your trip, but I find the trips I'm on to be 2x as much fun when there is HAM. Not the technology itself, but the fact that communication is so effortless just makes it a lot more fun. More of a group activity, instead of a "parallel play" activity like it was with FRS.

| Mine worked great! I think we had a few moments where the hand held units were not being heard back to front too well -- but both were in the trucks, no external antenna, unless I'm mistaken. I bought a 4 foot whip antenna, so in a situation like we were in, it was more than adequate. |

That can happen. The handhelds have lower tx power, and poorer rx ability. The other thing about them is that their built in speakers are often inadequate in a noisy vehicle. An external antenna and external speaker seem to make a big difference for them. But, yeah, I've noticed the handhelds having trouble on all the trips that I've been on too.

| Under 2010. It won't show up for viewing in the gallery until someone uploads at least 1 photo. It will, however, show up in the list of available albums when uploading photos. |

Go to Trips and Activities, press Add New at the top of the page. Select Activities->2010->Mt Defiance for the album.
Can a non-admin verify that it is showing up?

| It is there. I loaded three pictures but they are waiting to be approved. Are there suggested size limits for the pictures that we load? Is there a quantity limit that we should adhere to? Dustin |

| Size them such that the largest side is 1600 pixels. Toss them all into a zip file and you can upload a single zip file with all your photos instead of uploading them one at a time. Make sure the zip file only contains photos and does not contain any folders. No limit on the number of photos you can upload, though I'd encourage you to only upload the good ones.  Craig |

| It was a good trip, and after reviewing the maps, the bit that we missed looks to be even better than what we were able to drive. Snow.... oh well, it's happened before.
The area you see with the mud was deceptively tricky. We all made it through, but if it had rained a bit harder, it had every potential to be an exercise in simple winching techniques. It was difficult to walk on, but the trucks must have been heavy enough to get down the the solid stuff underneath.
The scenery was great, and the view from the top must be fantastic on a clear day.
It was a lot of fun to meet all of you, your families, and your dogs. A good group of people!
Dustin, on Google Earth the road veers to the NW at the first little lake -- it looks like it goes across the dam, and takes a direct route up to where we drove round about by going through the campground. Maybe that will be a good way to go next time, it looks like it cuts a mile or two off the trip up. |

| Ben, If the route is the one I believe you are describing, that is what we tried on Friday when we scouted the area. We made it most of the way there and then became blocked by large boulders across the road and a complete logging operation that really altered the roads that were listed on the maps that I had. This is what made us end up taking the route we used Monday. I know there is another way up there and will discover it. A little later in the year we should run back up there with a smaller group and actualy determine what routes go where and map it out correctly for another larger group run. Dustin |
