Diagnostic process followed to isolate and identify a fue problem on a 1996 Land Rover Discovery 1 in a no-start situation.

Materials:

  • 10mm socket wrench.
  • 13mm socket wrench.
  • 13mm spanner/ box wrench.
  • Small phillips screwdriver.
  • Multimeter.
  • ShopVac.
  • Bucket.
  • Shop light.
  • Zipties.
  • WD40
  • Assistant to turn ignition for testing current.

Initial troubleshooting:

1. Tank full.

2. Fuses and relays apparently intact.

3. Engine sensors and MAFS inspected and cleaned with WD40.

4. Fuel rail relief valve (schrader) released with no appreciable fuel pressure.

5. Bucket placed under fuel line and fuel filter removed.

6. Cargo space mat and sound insulation pulled back to reveal tank cover.

7. Removed tank cover and examined fuel pump sending unit/multi-plug:

8. Remove multiplug and test power delivery to the pump with your multimeter as the key is turned to the accessory position; this is the fuel system pressurization phase. I found that the two lower terminals provided power [(white/purple stripe) + (BLACK) ] when the key is turned to the accessory position (recall '96 D1).

I noticed that the connector was held on by a zip tie that was placed by a previous mechanic. This ziptie had since broken and the multiplug was loose. SO I replaced the plug, held it firmly in place and had the key turned to Accessory. The fuel pump initiated pressurization and fuel spillage (remember the filter was removed) was audible.

DIAGNOSIS: FAULTY MULTIPLUG

A new multiplug/sending unit was ordered; TWO ZIPTIES applied and the cover replaced. Engine started with same ease as before failure.
